Industry Growth - Breweries
Updated: Jun 14, 2018
Although industry growth is a good sign for current breweries, it can also signal opportunity for new entrants.

In 2017 the Lower Mainland experienced exceptional growth in the craft brewery industry with the addition of 26 new craft breweries. The addition of these breweries is a 20% increase from the previous year, 2016, ending the year at 154 total breweries.
Due to changing preferences and a steady increase in per capita disposable income, consumers have shifted away from traditional beer brands and placed an emphasis on higher quality products from craft breweries.
In addition to a steady increase in disposable income, wheat prices have decreased 12.2% from 2013-2018. As commodity prices represent a considerable cost to craft beer producers, this reduction in expenses allow breweries to maintain as opposed to increase their current prices.
